Universities Can Do More To Change Their Approach On Political Issues

Several American universities—including the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Stanford, USC and the University of Texas system—recently joined the movement of schools adopting the practice of institutional neutrality. Universities and their leaders are refraining from taking public positions on social and political issues that aren’t directly related to the core mission and functioning of the school. Harvard and others made the shift earlier this year.
