Trust in Higher Ed Was Low. It Just Got Lower.
Preview:
We have plenty of reasons to be deeply concerned about the current state of higher education in America. The issues raised in this week’s congressional hearing, in which three women who preside over prestigious universities were lectured, harangued, and threatened by Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives, should not, however, be among them. The hearing revealed almost nothing about the quality of higher education but a great deal about the current nature of our public discourse and the disappearance of any genuine curiosity or moral complexity. It was also a stark reminder to those of us in higher education that, to put it simply, many people don’t like us.
