The ABCs of Community College Leadership: What CEOs Need to Know
Preview:
The allure of a community college presidency lies in the opportunity it affords to effect meaningful change in the lives of our students. The ability to implement strategies, remove barriers, and marshal resources to realize that aspiration is what valorizes the seat. And those who approach the work any differently rarely enjoy prolonged or notable success. But despite a CEO’s best intentions, colleagues, constituents, and communities have extremely high (and at times unreasonable) expectations of those in the role. In many cases the pressure to deliver is even greater for Black CEOs, given indurate preconceptions about our capacity to lead. As such, it is critical to summon (and strengthen) our knowledge, skills, and talents to master the rudiments of community college leadership. In my own professional life, I strive to remain mindful of the ABCs for CEOs.
