Student Success in STEM

As chief executive officers in the California community college system, we embarked upon the topic of STEM out of an acute awareness of the lack of opportunities available to disproportionately impacted communities, and a shared commitment to forging increased pathways for those with the least access. Despite the rising demand for skilled professionals in STEM fields—illustrated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ projection that the majority of the fastest-growing occupations from 2023 to 2033 are in STEM—these promising careers often remain inaccessible to underrepresented groups. Positions such as data scientists, medical and health service managers, physician assistants, and epidemiologists highlight the immense potential need for students entering these fields.
