My first encounter with the value of genuine diversity came at an early age, when our family moved from the 1950s American South to what a 10-year-old of the day thought of as foreign territory — “Yankee country!” I exclaimed when my dad broke the news to us kids. The experiences that awaited me in Indiana were jolting, starting with finding my new neighborhood peers playing basketball, not baseball, in July. But by far the most eye-opening, soul-opening difference was to find myself surrounded by people whose heritage and faith were entirely new to me.
